How do I commission a custom piece of pottery? You will need to contact us via email, we need to know some of the particulars: 1) your timeframe - Today is not the answer, nor tomorrow, or yesterday!! 😂 2) size or sizes - What she said 😮- how much do you want to hold in ounces for mugs, or how big of a bowl, ramen, cereal fruit bowl size.. Etc.. how wide how deep .. 3) design theme you have in mind - your creativity spurs ours!! 4) Color theme if any- Understand one glaze does not look the same on different clay bodies.. 5) what type of pottery are you wanting or needing. Pots, mugs, planters, wall art, etc...If we can make it we go after it!! 6) Understand that each piece is handmade and not every piece will be identical. We strive to get as close as possible. i.e Coffee mugs and tumblers, plates, bowls, we will get a as close to possible to make it work for you, We will use forms, or laser levels, weight scales, dead reckoning and compass. 😉 7) once production for piece (s) starts we need 1/2 down and the other 1/2 plus shipping prior to delivery. To be discussed in email exchanges.

How are pieces made?We do ceramic handbuilding and wheel thrown ceramics. We use a Brent electric pottery wheel or Leach Style treadle wheel depending on our locations. We fire using a Skutt electric kiln. Some pieces are 1x fired to Cone 6 - other pieces are fired to bisque, then glazed, and refired to Cone 6. With a additional firing if needed for overglaze decals or lustres. It's quite the process,

Are the pottery items from Prickly Bear Pottery safe for daily use, including in the microwave and dishwasher?Yes, the functional food use pottery items from Prickly Bear Pottery are made using food-safe products from tested glaze suppliers. We also conduct our own rigorous acid testing on all pieces before they are available for purchase. Our dinnerware is generally microwave safe unless specifically noted otherwise, and it is also dishwasher safe. However, to preserve the beauty of each handcrafted piece, we recommend handwashing whenever possible. Please note that our pottery should never be placed in the refrigerator then heated in microwave or vice versa, thermal shock is a pottery "no no." Planters and decorative pottery may include glazes that are not food safe., which will be in the description of the decorative pottery.
